American Express® for Small Business - Built for Business Owners
Choosing the Right Rewards Card for Your Business
Choosing the right rewards card can be difficult, but not if you start by asking the right questions.

As the saying goes, you have to spend money to make money, and perhaps nobody understands that better than small business owners.

Business expenses such as inventory, gas, travel and client entertainment can add up quickly… so wouldn’t it be nice if some of the money put towards these things could stretch a little further?

Choosing the right rewards card can be difficult, but not if you start by asking the right questions. Navigating between statement credits, merchandise and gifts, travel rewards, or additional services can be easy, if you spend a few minutes examining your expenses and considering where you make your most frequent business purchases.

Charge cards offer a rich suite of rewards, insurance, and benefits that business owners can take advantage of simply by charging the business purchases they’re already making to their card.

Choose a card that offers additional benefits on frequent business purchases.

If you frequently use the same suppliers, look for a card that offers additional benefits on those purchases. Some cards help you earn extra points on purchases you make from specific suppliers. For example, the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card helps you earn 1 extra point for every $1 in eligible purchases charged to the Card at 3 suppliers you pick from a list1 of select American Express merchants in Canada.

Why this matters: Remember what we said about stretching the money you spend on business purchases? That’s exactly what the Business Gold Rewards Card can do for you. It allows you to redeem points for statement credits to offset travel2 or business3 expenses charged to your card.

Turn business expenses into points, which you can use for travel and merchandise.

If you frequently travel on business, a card specializing in travel rewards will probably offer you the most value. The money spent on regular business travel can quickly turn into valuable reward points and be used for future personal or business-related travel, as well as for merchandise. Consider a platinum card, as these cards also typically offer some great travel perks.

Did you know? Aside from the above, the Business Platinum Card from American Express also provides access to airport lounges and preferential treatment with hotel chains (such as Fairmont). Beyond that, Business Platinum Cardmembers have access to a concierge service, which is great for making hotel and restaurant reservations, securing exclusive tickets to an event, and more. If you’re a Collector of the AIR MILES®* Reward Program, consider a Card that will help you get the most out of the program.

Using the American Express AIR MILES for Business Card in addition to your AIR MILES Collector card can help you earn miles twice at AIR MILES sponsors - once with your AIR MILES Collector card, and once with your American Express AIR MILES for Business Card. This will help you to accumulate miles faster and redeem for business or personal rewards.

Did you know? The American Express AIR MILES for Business Card also allows you to benefit from an exclusive 25% discount4 on business rewards when you redeem for rewards from the AIR MILES For Business Rewards catalogue, a new online catalogue designed especially with the small business owner in mind.
